Darrel was the kind of man who had an intensity for life. He quested for knowledge on every subject and always had more and more questions. Usually why? His search for the truth was stemmed from trying to help others. Putting himself in their place and feeling their pain or anger or confusion or joy, no matter what the situation, then working to find a solution, knowing there was an answer waiting to be found. His children were his pride. His friends were his roots. And every stranger was someone who might need his help and he was ready to offer assistance.
Volunteer Research Technician, was his own unofficial title. He had the drive and patience to do the "above and beyond" that was important, the job no one else would take. As a perfectionist, he was amazed at statistics, seeing life in a predictable pattern that held the answers. After all, life was a test and he was always concerned with passing. He was willing to fight for what was right, no matter what the cost.
Darrel's father introduced him, to the love and appreciation of nature. Not only as a hunter and a fisherman, but as a star gazer,an environmentalist, and an animal lover. He would enjoy the experience for himself and then would share it with others in his photographs, his stories and his writings. Documentation was important. He wished to tell the biggest fish story and then back it up with pictures.
The rhythm of life somehow had a sound to it. Playing music by ear came so easy. The guitar, organ, piano and drums were all self taught. He knew the names of the birds and reptiles and was facinated by their existence and life cycles. When he rescued a baby Mockingbird and brought it home, he got to study first hand each step of the process. Once Mock reached juvenile adulthood, Darrel taught him how to find worms in the ground, stand his ground in establishing territory and where and when to hide to avoid being prey to others. Amazingly enough,Mock did fly out the window for the last time to survive and raise a family. Darrel could walk outside and whistle to call in the whole family for a treat of mealworms.
Illness was unfair and unnecessary, especially for children who shouldn't have to suffer. He admired anyone able to cope with such hardships. His family and friends who dealt with cancer and physical challenges inspired him. When they hurt, he hurt. He wished for everyone to taste the best life has to offer and would work to keep up their spirits, bring a little humor out of them or at least take their minds out for a spin in the fresh air of insanity. Someone did truly care.
Darrel was ever mindful of the power of faith. He would thank the Lord often, as if he were standing right there next to him. If for no other reason but to acknowledge for those who could hear, who deserved the credit. Everything has a purpose and a reason for happening. Realizing certain events in his life were destined, was sometimes hard to understand, he always felt responsible for not being able to foresee and prevent accidents.
There was almost a childlike quality to the way he enjoyed cartoons. He knew all the songs, the shows plots and the voices behind the characters. Their catch phrases were new and original and he proudly wore hats and shirts showing off his favorite, Pinky and the Brain. It was kind of a release from everyday stress and pressures. A chance to be relaxed and entertained.
